This paper argues that daughterhood is a permanent relational social location. One that fails a person across four distinct sites at once: family, society, the state, and our aspirational grammar. Drawing on Hortense Spillers's body/flesh distinction and the Strong Black Woman schema, the paper develops several original frameworks, including Black Daughterhood, coming-of-age under racial capitalism where safety and domestic sanctuary are structurally foreclosed, The Failure of Holding, the systemic absence of a holding environment for girls and women, and Subversive Tenderness as a mode of response.
